Celebrating Improvised Theatre
Improvised theatre, or simply improv, is a form of theatre that is created on the spot: none of the presented scenes are previously rehearsed. There are no scripts, no lines to remember; only spontaneous creation and generosity on stage. NZIF is your opportunity to witness our top companies and performers pushing the boundaries of what improv is and can do, and creating theatre that has never and will never be seen again.
NZ's best improvisors all in one city
The New Zealand Improv Festival gathers improvisational theatre companies from around the nation (and around the globe) to present new work, learn new skills and make connections across the industry. Previous national guests have come from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and international guests have included Patti Stiles (Melbourne), Rama Nicholas (Melbourne), Rebecca De Unamuno (Sydney), Crumbs (Canada), Jason Geary (Melbourne), and Rik Brown (Melbourne).
World Class Performance on the Wellington Stage
Works presented at the New Zealand Improv Festival have gone on to successful national and international tours, including ConArtists' Austin Found and Christine Brooks' The Long Weekend. Be among the first to catch the next big thing - sign up for our audience mailer.
Collaboration and experimentation
The New Zealand Improv Festival is not only an opportunity to watch the best in improvised theatre; we also run masterclass workshops for practitioners to develop their skills and collaborate on new formats. If you are an improvisor and are interested in participating in this or future festivals, please join our practitioner group on Facebook.
